West Nipissing Community Health Centre Advances Commitment to Reconciliation Through Staff Training and Partnership

The West Nipissing Community Health Centre (WNCHC) is proud to share meaningful progress in its ongoing commitment to reconciliation and culturally safe care for Indigenous clients.

Following the signing of a formal partnership agreement in Fall 2025 with the Models of Care Initiative led by the North Bay Indigenous Hub, the Centre has taken important steps to strengthen awareness, knowledge, and practice across our organization. All frontline staff, along with some dedicated volunteers, have successfully completed comprehensive Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) training.

This training focused on key principles of cultural safety in the workplace and included education on:

  • The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action related to health
  • Historical events that continue to share the current health landscape and outcomes for Indigenous Peoples.
  • Practical steps to create safer and more inclusive environments for Indigenous clients.
  • Opportunities for personal reflection on biases, assumptions, and factors influencing attitudes and beliefs.

In recognition of these efforts, the team was honored to receive a personalized plaque from the Models of Care Team, which will be displayed in our reception area, beside Indigenous artwork that was gifted to us by the North Bay Indigenous Hub. This symbol reflects our ongoing commitment to create respectful, inclusive and culturally safe care environment.

We are grateful for the guidance and collaboration of the Models of Care Team. Our partnership and collaboration efforts have been instrumental in helping us build awareness and take concrete steps toward reconciliation. We recognize that this in an ongoing journey, and we remain committed to continuous learning and meaningful action.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Models of Care Team for their ongoing support and the collaborative spirit that continues to drive this important work forward.
